NOPD makes progress solving recent violent crimes

New Orleans homicide count stands at 124 for the 2024 year as of Wednesday morning, NOPD Supt. Anne Kirkpatrick said.

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans homicide count stands at 124 for the 2024 year as of Wednesday morning, NOPD Supt. Anne Kirkpatrick said.

That means the number of homicides is down roughly 33 percent over last year, but in the last month, there has been an uptick in high-profile shootings.

In a press conference on Wednesday, NOPD gave major updates on the department's progress solving the violent crimes.

“We are going in the right direction, and I want our community to feel safe, to align with the reality," Kirkpatrick said, "And the reality is, you are safer."

Nov. 17 - Second Line Shooting

Two separate shootings at the Nine Times Second Line on Nov. 17 left 11 people injured and two dead.

NOPD announced on Wednesday they have made additional arrests, bringing the total number to three arrests.

Capt. Jennifer Hill-Dupree said nine innocent bystanders and one suspect were hurt in the first shooting that took place at the parade.

“We believe that the incident occurred due to an argument between two subjects, they started a feud and produced a handgun," Hill-Dupree said.

Nov. 21 - French Quarter Shooting

Later that week, one woman was killed, and three others were injured as gunfire broke out near Royal and Iberville in the French Quarter.

So far, NOPD has arrested one man and has issued arrest warrants for 21-year-old Daniel Miorana and 29-year-old Darrell Adams.

Dec. 1 - Quadruple Shooting

Two weeks later, during Bayou Classic Weekend, a shooting took place near busy Canal Street leaving four people injured.

Police have arrested an East Baton Rouge man in connection to that shooting. Capt. Lejon Roberts said another shooter is on the run.

Roberts said he did not want to disclose details about the shooter because it would jeopardize the case.

“I’m confident that we’ll be here again in the next few days giving you the information on the second perpetrator of that incident," Roberts said.

Dec. 16 - Cox Worker Killed

This week, a Cox Cable employee was gunned down in New Orleans East. 35-year-old Adam Brown died at UMC hospital later that day.

“We believe the motive is attempted armed robbery at this point," NOPD Homicide Detective, Matthew Riffle, said.

Police are searching for the alleged shooter, 28-year-old Jalil Williams.
