State of emergency issued for Louisiana ahead of freeze

Gov. Landry signed off on the state of emergency set to go into effect from Sunday until Wednesday. It was Landry's first such declaration as governor.

A state of emergency will go into effect for Louisiana starting Sunday after a declaration from Gov. Jeff Landry as freezing temperatures are expected throughout the state thanks to an arctic blast.

The order will go into effect from Sunday until Wednesday when WWL meteorologists project that temperatures in the Northshore are expected to dip as low as 17 degrees.

"We are encouraging everyone to prepare for these conditions and heed the advice of your local officials," Landry said on Friday. "Road crews are on standby in an attempt to keep our roads open."

The announcement was the first weather emergency of the newly inaugurated governor's tenure. The declaration allows for increased access to state emergency funds.
