School zone cameras to turn on within the week, city officials say

The city said any fines generated in school zones will be held in an escrow until "all final agreements are in place."

NEW ORLEANS — School-zone traffic cameras are expected to be activated within the week, the City of New Orleans said on Wednesday.

City officials said they are working with the Orleans Parish School Board, charter schools, the Archdiocese, and other school governing bodies to finalize an agreement regarding a new state law.

Senate House Bill 302 prohibits issuing automatic traffic violation citations in certain circumstances.

School-zone traffic cameras were supposed to be turned on Aug. 1, but new legislation delayed the activation.

With the safety of students in mind, stakeholders agreed " that the red-light cameras should be turned on within the school zones while we all work towards CEA finalization," the release said.

The city said any fines generated in school zones will be held in an escrow until "all final agreements are in place."

No other information is available. City officials said more updates will come soon.
