NEW ORLEANS — All school-zone traffic cameras will not be activated on Thursday, Aug. 1, according to the City of New Orleans.
As of Thursday, Aug. 1, the city said negotiations are still underway on how the city operates the school zone camera under the new law.
"No school zone traffic tickets will be issued even if there is a camera light flash from a school zone camera," officials said in a release.
On Wednesday, city officials said the reactivation of school zone cameras will be delayed.
"Due to new Louisiana state legislation (Senate House Bill 302) the citywide school zone cameras reactivation will be delayed and not begin on tomorrow Thursday, August 1, 2024. The City will keep the public updated on when school zone cameras will reactivate," the statement said.
All school-zone traffic cameras will be turned back on for the start of the 2024-2025 school year according to New Orleans officials. Cameras will be reactivated in August for the school year.
School zone speed camera operation hours are from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, enforcing 20 mph speed limits during the academic year.
Last year, Mayor Cantrell signed an ordinance that expanded school zone eligibility to high schools. It will allow the city to install crosswalks, signs, striping, and " 'other traffic control devices" for all New Orleans schools, according to Nola.com.
The ordinance is scheduled to take effect in the 2024-2025 academic year, the administration said in a previous release.
"Between 2017-2021, there were 6,532 crashes near New Orleans schools, according to an analysis performed by the administration. Over half of the crashes involved serious injuries near schools," our partners reported.
High schools in Orleans Parish have over 70 traffic cameras for school zone enforcement.
