EPA wants lawsuit against Denka Plant revived in St. John Parish

The EPA said the plant's chloroprene emissions increase the risk of cancer for nearby residents in the parish.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. — The Environmental Protection Agency is asking a federal judge to restart a lawsuit aiming to force a St. John Parish Denka Plant to reduce its chemical emissions.

The EPA said the plant's chloroprene emissions increase the risk of cancer for nearby residents in St. John Parish.

Earlier this year, the agency gave the plant until October to reduce its emissions by 95 percent, but the Denka Plant appealed it, saying they needed more time.

An appeals court sided with the plant and pushed the deadline back to July 2026. According to our partners at Nola.com, the EPA wants a judge to revisit the issue.

Denka called the request politically motivated.
