Saints sign returning wide receiver, waive injured tight end

Callaway's most productive season for the Saints came in 2021 when he led the team in receiving yards (698) and touchdown receptions (6).

IRVINE, Calif — The New Orleans Saints announced on Thursday that the team has re-signed veteran wide receiver Marquez Callaway for a third stint with the team.

Callaway was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Tennessee in 2020. The 6-foot-2, 204-pound Callaway started 17 out of 45 regular-season games from that year until his first release on March 15, 2023.

A little more than a week later he signed with former Saints coach Sean Payton in Denver but was released in August. He immediately signed with the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad but was released in October.

Callaway rejoined the Saints in November, playing in three games but not registering a reception. He was not re-signed and was a free agent again at the end of the season.

He has recorded career totals of 83 receptions for 1,069 yards with seven touchdowns, returned 14 punts for 149 yards (10.6 avg.) and returned four kickoffs for 94 yards (23.5 avg.).

Callaway's most productive season for the Saints came in 2021 when he led the team in receiving yards (698) and touchdown receptions (6). He averaged 15.2 yards per catch.

Prior to rejoining the Saints for a third time, Callaway spent the offseason with the Pittsburgh Steelers after signing with the team in January.

Callaway, who finished his college career in Knoxville with a 13.6 punt return average that ranked fourth in school history. His three punt return touchdowns rank second all-time.

During his first season with the Saints, he received 11 punts for 122 yards and 4 kickoff returns for 94 yards.

In other team transactions, the Saints waived tight end Tommy Hudson, who suffered a hamstring injury during training camp at UC-Irvine in California on Wednesday.
