Saints place Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy on injured reserve, call up practice squad lineman

McCoy is expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks following surgery.

METAIRIE, La. — With 2023 Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy expected to undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair an injured groin suffered on the third play in the 15-12 Week 3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the New Orleans Saints placed him on injured reserve.

McCoy is expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks due to recovery.

In the meantime, the Saints turned to its practice squad to call up guard Shane LeMieux, a former fifth-round draft choice (2020) of the New York Giants who signed with New Orleans in the offseason.

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound LeMieux appeared in 18 games with 12 starts in four seasons with New York, including four games and one start last year before a season-ending biceps injury.

With LeMieux's call-up, the Saints added an additional guard Chris Reed to the practice squad.

Reed, 6-3, 314, is an eight-year NFL veteran, who most recently appeared in three games for the Minnesota Vikings in 2023 and spent training camp and the 2024 preseason with the Houston Texans.

A total of nine players were listed on the team's Wednesday injury report for Week 4, including:

  • QB – Derek Carr, Left Groin – Full Participation (FP)
  • TE – Taysom Hill, Chest – FP
  • LB – D'Marco Jackson, Calf – Limited Participation (LP)

  • CB – Alontae Taylor, Illness – Did Not Participate (DNP)
  • LB – Demario Davis, Hamstring – DNP
