HOOVER, Ala. — 11th-seed LSU made easy work of 6th seed Georgia in a single elimination game on the opening day of the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala., on Tuesday.
The win comes off the arm of lefthander Gage Jump, who recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings during the 9-1 win over the Bulldogs (39-15 overall, 17-14 SEC).
Third baseman Tommy White and shortstop Michael Braswell III both went 3-for-6 at the plate with an RBI each, while leftfielder Josh Pearson added three RBIs and second baseman Steven Milam added two and a home run.
LSU, which improved to 37-20 on the season and 14-17 in the SEC, now advances into the field of eight where the Tigers will take on third-seed Kentucky on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
The remaining bracket is double elimination.
LSU won the College World Series in 2024 but it may have some work to do if it is to even make the 64-team NCAA Tournament field in 2024.
The Tigers were considered one of the nation's elite during the preseason, but LSU struggled out of the gate before rallying to win four of its final five regular-season series.
All of the tournament games are on the SEC Network, except for the championship contest, which will be on ESPN 2. As always, at this time of year, rain or inclement weather could push games back.
