"The most intense fire I've ever been to" - fire kills five people

State fire experts are trying to figure out what caused a house fire that killed five people in Houma.

LAFOURCHE PARISH, La. — State fire experts are trying to figure out what caused a house fire that killed five people in Houma over the weekend.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre says this is the one of the most intense fires he's ever seen.

According to the sheriff's office, the call came in just before 4 a.m. Saturday. Video shows the home completely engulfed in flames.

"The first fireman to respond lives not on that street, lives on the main Bayou Blue Road that intersects with that street and when he got out of his he could see the blaze up in the sky," said Webre. "I would say it's the most intense fire that I've ever been to."

Webre says five people died in the fire; three adults, a toddler and a teenager. He says another teenager did manage to break through a window and escape. "I don't know if they were all related, but I do know there was a mother, father and child," he said. He went on to say the house was on a dead end street and with it starting so early in the morning the fire was able to intensify.

"They had to get wood and prop up the roof structure and the floor looked like the floor could collapse at any moment, the heat was so incredible."

"I heard a big boom, by the time I got out of the shower the car was fully engulfed and then the truck caught fire," said Christina Evans, a neighbor.

She says a young family who just moved to the neighborhood lived at the home.

"They've only been here five months, they just bought their first lawnmower yesterday and mowed the grass for the first time - very young couple, nice people, just trying to live."

"Its even emotional on the neighbors because we've seen that baby run around the yard that morning," she said.

The state fire marshal is investigating what caused this fire.
