The Breakdown: Small rate hike, fewer fees for Entergy Louisiana customers

In your Breakdown: news for Entergy Louisiana customers; slightly higher rates, but fewer fees.

NEW ORLEANS — Let’s get right to the bottom line.

If you’re an Entergy Louisiana customer, your bills will increase about 2-percent starting next month. That’s about four dollars for most customers.

But Entergy is drastically reducing late fees from 5-percent to 1.5-percent, eliminating connection and reconnection fees, and expanding discounts for seniors.

This increase is half of what Entergy Louisiana asked the Louisiana Public Service Commission for last year.

Commissioners were able to negotiate the rate down by settling the litigation about alleged mismanagement at Entergy’s Grand Gulf nuclear plant in Mississippi. You can view the meeting here.

That plant has gone down several times in recent years, making energy more expensive and sticking customers with the markup.

Entergy New Orleans settled this issue with New Orleans City Council this spring with a 250-million dollar payout.

This week’s PSC’s settlement with Entergy Louisiana also approves hiring an independent monitoring engineer to oversee the strengthening of the grid, and follow the money you’ll be paying to improve the system.

You can expect to see the modest increase in your bill in September.
