NEW ORLEANS — A new theater production at the Mahalia Jackson Theater is hoping to incite dialogue about racial injustice with the opera 'Blue'. Performed by an all-Black cast, the show aims to spark conversations around the issue.
WWL-TV's Whitney Miller spoke to the cast and crew about the impact the show will have in the community.
"When people see the show they will gravitate towards those bigger themes about community love and just familial love," said Pierce Rhodes, who plays the role of the son in the production. Rhodes said the production parallels with real life stories, like George Floyd.
"There is this sense that we get to actually grieve and mourn and celebrate the life and death of these incredible people and the tragedies that befell them", he told Miller.
A professional counselor is working with the cast, crew and even the audience to help them in processing some of the heavy topics.
"Everyone can have moments that can trigger them or they may not know that things can be traumatic to them but I think this gives them the opportunity to recognize that and become aware," said Bria Mitchell, a licensed counselor.
Opening night is Friday, Nov. 10 and the second and final show is Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2:30 p.m.
