NEW ORLEANS — Good news after a dramatic mid-hurricane rescue of a Saints legend. Steve Gleason, who continues to fight ALS, is recovering in the hospital, after a medical emergency.
The family of Steve Gleason, and those at Team Gleason are getting hundreds of well wishes as he recovers in the hospital. His publicist says the outpouring is from across the country.
“I've heard from everything from the White House to politicians to other football players, just a number of people," said Clare Durrett, Gleason’s publicist. "Everyone in New York has just been reaching out from the U.S. Open, CBS Mornings. It's been beautiful to see,” she said.
Steve was just in New York last week doing an interview with CBS news correspondent David Begnaud for his segment that will air Monday morning.
But it was this past Wednesday when he had a fever and felt he needed to go to the hospital.
“People with ALS tend to have low blood pressure, and in Steve's case, it was just dangerously low," Durrett said. "He's better now. He's on interventional medication for his blood pressure and for an infection.”
And Wednesday was the day Hurricane Francine came ashore.
“The challenge was that they had to get EMS and first responders to his house. There was some significant street flooding,” said Durrett.
He is doing better today, and all signs are showing he will continue to improve, but he is anxious to get home.
“Steve's favorite thing is to be outside with the family," she said. "So, he, with it being a beautiful day like it is today, there's nothing more that he'd like to do than being outside.”
The man we all know, who is working to make significant change worldwide for people living with ALS, often tells his team to use love in all their decisions and actions.
“While we were all worried about him in the hospital, he all sent us a text last night, words of encouragement for us to live every moment of every day, and told us good night, and he loves us,” she said.
And he has a particular goal for this weekend.
“I know Steve wants to be home and ready to watch the Saints play on Sunday. Who Dat,” Durrett laughed.
Steve Gleason also started a project called Answer ALS.
