Longtime New Orleans Saints legend Steve Gleason was rushed to Ochsner Hospital as Hurricane Francine swept across the city on Wednesday night.
The recent Authur Ashe Award recipient's team took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to thank the New Orleans Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service first responders for braving 'unsafe circumstances' to get him to the hospital.
"For those who have asked, Steve was taken to Ochsner last night during the storm," posted a Team Gleason spokesperson. "He is now stable. We want to thank @NOLAFireDept first responders and @NewOrleansEMS for getting to us during unsafe circumstances and to the @OchsnerHealth staff for their immediate care. We will update everyone as soon as we know more. Thanks, the Gleason Crew"
Gleason played with the Saints from 2000 until 2006. He is most known for his blocked punt against the Atlanta Falcons in 2006, the game is significant as it was the team's first game back in the Superdome post-Hurricane Katrina.
Gleason, who has been immortalized in bronze for famously blocking a punt against the Atlanta Falcons in the Saints' first game back in the Superdome following Hurricane Katrina, played in New Orleans from 2000 to 2006.
The Congressional Gold Medal recipient was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2011.
