NEW ORLEANS — The list of what we've lost over the years is long.
But now — for a change — two beloved local institutions are set to return.
Morning Call and Bud's Broiler will soon open again, side by side, at Canal and City Park.
It's just an empty lot right now, but this is what you should expect to see by September.
Signs of what's to come are here -- and there are test pilings that make it obvious: something is about to take shape here.
The Bud's Broiler on City Park Avenue — the original location — closed its doors in 2018, leaving just a handful of locations in the metro area, but none in New Orleans.
Meanwhile, Morning Call had been a popular coffee and beignet stand in the French Quarter and, later, suburbs since 1870.
But it went by the wayside after it closed its Metairie location and later lost its lease in City Park almost two years ago now.
There was always a promise to return.
"We're not going by the wayside like K&B did, ain't there no more,” Morning Call co-owner Bob Hennessey said the night he closed his shop in City Park. “We will be here some more. Probably more than ever.”
And now, the beignets will soon be back, just in time for the 150th anniversary.
