JEFFERSON, La. — Two major events have been rescheduled due to anticipated storms forecast to hit the New Orleans area over the weekend.
According to the president of the Mardi Gras Indian Council, Bertrand Butler, the annual Super Sunday celebration has been postponed until the following Sunday, March 24. According to one Big Chief, there will also be a few tribes at Congo Square on Sunday, March 24th.
Meanwhile, the Jefferson Parish's St. Patrick's Day parade has been pushed back three weeks to April 7, according to J.P. government officials.
On Friday, parade leaders and parish officials decided that the luck of the Irish would not help with the weather forecast.
Parade President Dan Civello said this is the 53rd annual Jefferson Parish St. Patrick's Day parade, which is the biggest parade in the parish but the parade is now going to be on April 7th.
Civello said, "This is only the second time we've had to cancel."
Now remember riders throw vegetables at this parade, Civello says canceling Friday gives riders time to cancel produce orders.
"If we'd have waited till tomorrow or Sunday morning the vegetables would've been gone, they can save a substantial amount of money cancelling the orders," he said.
The St. Patrick's Day Classic, a 2-mile race that starts on Metairie Road was not expected to change dates. Instead, the race will take place at 9 a.m. instead of 10 a.m. on Sunday.
JP officials said those interested in running the classic should visit the race website.
WWL Meteorologists have projected heavy rain throughout St. Patrick's Day weekend, with Sunday bringing a 90% chance of showers.
