Neighbor describes aftermath of deadly road rage crash in Kenner

Glass and other debris can still be seen where the crash happened

KENNER, La. — We're getting a better idea as to what led to Thursday's deadly crash on West Esplanade Avenue. The crash claimed the lives of a 22-year-old and her unborn child.

"I heard loud screeching," remembers Austin Hanner. "And then you heard a loud boom and a loud explosion from the power lines."

Broken glass, splintered wood, and police markings are all reminders of Thursday's deadly crash.

"Very heartbreaking," said Edward Lee. "Especially when you're young in life, and it's just so precious."

Kenner Police say 22-year-old Jade Lewis was driving on West Esplanade Avenue when a SUV tried getting over. She didn't let that driver in, and the two cars sped up.

"The driver of the SUV, she swerved over and clipped the front of Jade's vehicle causing her to go sideways and hit a pole," said Lt. Michael Cunningham. "That point the SUV started to fishtail, lost control and hit the second electrical pole."

The SUV driver, a woman in her 40's went to the hospital.

"We helped her get out of the car," described Hanner. "She said she had some glass in her shoe."

However, Lewis and her unborn child died instantly.

"When I was walking out I saw a car seat in the back, I though that's horrible," said Hanner.

Lee, who's the deacon at the Chine Presbyterian Church, sees aggressive driving on West Esplanade Avenue too often. And seeing the aftermath is heartbreaking.

They forget to remember they're driving a vehicle that could become very dangerous, become a weapon almost," said Lee. "So no matter how much rage you got, you have to hold it within, take a deep breath and relax because you could kill someone and in this case it did kill someone and her child."

With fatal consequences, the crash is weighing heavily on neighbors, who say something like this should've never happened.

"Now that family has to go through funeral expenses and then all kinds of grief and you never get past that," said Hanner.

Following protocol, Kenner Police say they're awaiting toxicology results for the driver of the SUV before determining if charges need to be made.
