Mother says her Westbank apartment flooded after heavy rain, but it's not the first time

Belinda Miller woke up to find her apartment flooding. She said as the rain got heavier water started flowing in and she ended up with water up to her ankles.

GRETNA, La. — A Westbank mother said she woke up Friday morning to find her apartment flooding. She said as the rain got heavier Thursday night water started flowing in and she ended up with water up to her ankles.

Belinda Miller said she's about to break her lease and get out because she said, enough is enough.

Especially since this isn't the first time this has happened.

Miller said the water, "Got into my kitchen area, soaked my kitchen, my laundry room, my mother's room, bathroom, last night was even worse, it came up to my living home."

Belinda Miller is trying to salvage what she can of what she has left, she said, "My kitchen area was to my ankles, my mother's room also to my ankles."

She said just before 1 a.m. Friday, rainwater started coming through the walls and windows. She said she started throwing towels and clothes down to stop the water from seeping into her kids room.

"Bugs and everything seeping through, we had a few frogs last night."

In the kitchen in the other bedroom there was water. Miller said, "Oh I am very frustrated cause this is not the first time, it's happened several times."

She said she's been in this apartment since 2020 and that it's flooded before, saying, "I've even asked the lady for sandbags at one point."

WWL Louisiana spoke to the property manager here she said last night's flooding event was not an isolated incident. In fact property management says there has been flooding in the past, but last night was one of the worst they've seen.

Property management said they installed drainage in the front and back of the property. They said they've been reporting the flooding to Jefferson Parish. Property management said they spoke to Miller and understands her frustration.

"I pay my rent on time every month and I expect things to get fixed," said Miller.

A single mother to three kids, who's just trying to provide for her kids, she said because of this flooding she's lost clothes, electronics and even cherished drawings her kids made for her.

Now all she has left are the clothes she's wearing today, her pjs and her rouses uniform.

The property manager said they spoke to the four tenants on the ground floor who experienced flooding. They said they'd be happy to move tenants into another unit free of charge if one is available.

A Jefferson Parish spokesperson said they're working with property owners to investigate the flooding issue at this location and they're working with the City of Gretna.

Property management said they're willing to move residents into a new apartment free of charge if an apartment is available.
