Luling mother killed in DUI crash; driver released after serving less than a year

Daysha’s killer, 21-year-old Brogan Freman was out of jail, after serving just months behind bars.

LULING, La. — Last December, little Messiah was in his mother’s arms, celebrating his first and last Christmas with her.

“My child is gone, my grandson don’t have no mother, my family is destroyed," Daysha Carter’s mother said. "My family will never be the same again,” she said.

On Dec. 26, Daysha Carter and Messiah’s father were driving on Interstate 3-10 in Luling, when a drunk driver slammed into their car, killing Daysha.

“They just don’t know what they took from us,” Carter said.

A year later, her mother Kendra Carter was preparing for her first Christmas without her daughter when she got a call.

Daysha’s killer, 21-year-old Brogan Freman was out of jail, after serving just months behind bars.

“I was crying. I was mad. I had to get off the phone,” Carter said.

Court records show Fremen pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and was sentenced to 15 years, with 5 of them to be served in prison.

According to St. Charles Parish Assistant District Attorney Juan Byrd, the Department of Corrections released Fremen on good behavior, a decision he says was outside the District Attorney’s control.

The Department of Corrections sent a statement to WWL Louisiana saying, “Brogan Fremen released from prison onto good-time parole supervision after serving 35 percent of his Vehicular Homicide sentence as required by law.”

Daysha’s older sister Lenora Cenance says she feels like justice wasn’t served.

“She always wanted a child,” Daysha’s sister Lenora Cenance said. “Now, she has one and she’s not here. It’s not fair to him and it’s not fair to us.

Cenance says Daysha will never spend another holiday with her family, but her killer can still spend holidays with his.
