Family members grieve for new mom killed in crash

Carter’s family has organized a GoFundMe to help cover funeral costs and her son Messiah’s expenses.

ST. CHARLES PARISH, La. — Daysha Carter was a new mom with a bright future ahead.

“I’m telling you, she was truly amazing person,” Carter’s Aunt, Calandra Carter said “She had so much more life to give.”

On Christmas night, Carter and her boyfriend were driving home from her aunt’s house in Luling.

“For me, getting that phone call was unreal, because I never thought something like that could happen,” Carter said.

Just after midnight, a pickup truck hit their car on Interstate 310, pushing them off the road.

“She loved her son so much. He changed her life. Everything she did was about Messiah,” Carter said.

The crash left their two month old son Messiah without a mother, and Carter’s boyfriend a single father.

“I immediately started crying. I was like no way, she just left my house,” Carter said.

Police say the truck driver’s breathalyzer showed he was driving drunk.

“I hope that he gets some serious time. He needs serious time. He needs to pay for what he did,” Carter said.

Now charged with vehicular homicide, he is booked at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center in St. Charles Parish.

“No matter what happens with him, he’ll still be able to see his family,” Carter said. “We don’t have that. We won’t get that back.”

But even under the circumstances, Carter’s family couldn’t stop smiling when they talked about their memories together, describing her as the kind of person that could light up any room.

“She was just an amazing person. Heart of gold. Anything she had you could have it,” Carter said.

Carter’s story serves as a reminder to drink responsibly this New Year’s Eve.
