City to hire outside agency to take over S&WB billing

The outside agency would work with meter-reading teams, categorize and send bills properly and quickly address bill complaints.
The days of getting estimated bills from the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans are numbered, but there's another big change coming as well.

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans City Council is sending out requests for proposals for agencies interested in handling billing for the Sewerage and Water Board for a 12-18 month period.

Council members said that the agency that is hired would work with the meter-reading teams, categorize bills correctly, send them out properly and on time and fix bills promptly when there is a problem.

"For nearly eight years, residents have complained about wildly inaccurate SWBNO bills and undue delays having their billing problems promptly and properly resolved," said the council in a news release announcing the Request for Proposals.

"These billing issues must be fixed before SWBNO fully implements its smart meter program so the system is accurate," said District A Councilmember Joe Giarrusso.

The formal request will be sent by the SWBNO within the next 60 days and the council will require a quarterly report by the board on the progress on billing issues.
