NEW ORLEANS — The family of a 23-year-old fatal shooting victim created a GoFundMe over the weekend to help pay for funeral expenses following what they called a "fatal accident" last week.
The victim, identified by the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office on Monday as Giovanne Coleman, succumbed to injuries on Friday that he sustained in an incident that shut down the westbound side of the Crescent City Connection for two hours the previous afternoon.
The GoFundMe entitled "Paying Tribute to Giovanne Coleman" stated:
"It is with great sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Giovanne Coleman. He was a unique individual, whose life journey was as vibrant as it was impactful. Born into a loving family, Giovanne quickly developed a personality that was both endearing and inspiring. One of Giovanne’s most remarkable traits was his passion for his family and friends. His ability to care for everyone and be the man of the family was like no other. But above all, Giovanne cherished his 2-year-old daughter. He was a pillar of strength, support, and love within his family of 6 siblings. His role as a father, son, brother, and friend was one he embraced wholeheartedly. The love and lessons he imparted will be our guiding light in the days to come.
"As we come together to mourn the loss of our beloved Giovanne Coleman, who tragically passed away on February 22, 2024, due to a fatal accident, we are reaching out for your support. We are currently fundraising to cover the costs of Giovanne's burial and funeral services. Any contribution, no matter the amount, would be immensely appreciated and will go directly towards these expenses.
"If you are unable to contribute financially at this time, sharing this message with your friends and family would also mean a great deal to us. Your support and compassion during this difficult time are deeply valued. Thank you for keeping Giovanne and our family in your thoughts and for any assistance you can provide."
Police believe the shooting occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Thursday after NOPD investigators were able to determine that Coleman was struck while driving past the Tchoupitoulas Street exit and on the CCC when another car approached and shots were fired.
As of Monday morning, the GoFundMe has raised $465 of the $7,000 goal.
The investigation is still ongoing.
