When it comes to tax reform, lawmakers adhere to the old saying, “The devil is in the details.”
Right now, they’re waiting for their experts to run the numbers on Landry’s plan.
Meanwhile, Landry is offering sweeteners, like giving teachers a permanent pay raise.
In recent years, teachers got annual stipends of $2,000 a year, but each was a one-time deal.
Landry says his plan would make the stipend permanent.
But that and other benefits come at a price.
Dozens of currently untaxed services, like home repairs, haircuts, grass cutting and many others, would suddenly be taxed.
Those are just some of the devilish details that lawmakers and taxpayers will have to digest between now and November.
