NEW ORLEANS — Shortly before the first shots were fired in a mass shooting that killed two people and injured 11 during a second-line celebration on Sunday, NOPD began investigating a hit-and-run at St. Claude Avenue and Congress Street.

According to police, the incident occurred before 2:18 p.m. when a 34-year-old woman was struck while walking along the side of the street. Police said the suspect, 41-year-old Tonya Riley, allegedly fled the scene before being arrested.

Police said an NOPD officer witnessed the incident and was able to obtain a license plate number that linked the vehicle involved to the suspect.

The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while Riley was arrested and charged with hit-and-run driving.

This is a developing story and will be updated once further information becomes available.
