TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. — A former Tangipahoa Parish employee was arrested following his actions in 2021, when he took an inmate home to buy weapons from them, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office.
Donald Hammons, 56, was arrested on Friday on one count of Malfeasance in Office.
The sheriff's office said they learned Hammons "had taken a trustee inmate from the jail back to the inmate’s home in order to buy weapons from the inmate," in 2021, the release said.
Hammons was then brought in for questioning. He admitted to the allegation and voluntarily "surrendered the weapons involved," authorities said.
The sheriff's office fired Hammons, who had been employed at the parish jail since 2010 doing maintenance work until the administration changed this year in July.
“Security has been our top challenge at the jail, and therefore, our top priority,” said Sheriff Gerald Sticker.
“In those efforts to improve security, we have not only made personnel changes but increased training and certifications as well as instituted changes in general access by parish employees," he said.
