New Orleans teen pleads not guilty in fatal shooting of Washington business owner

He is set for a discovery hearing on August 1.

NEW ORLEANS — A New Orleans teen pleaded not guilty on Tuesday in the murder of Jacob Carter, a Washington business owner who was shot and killed on Jan. 5.

16-year-old Malik Cornelius has been transferred to adult court and faces a charge of second-degree murder, according to WWL Louisiana investigative reporter Mike Perlstein.

He was arraigned Tuesday before Judge Camille Buras and pleaded not guilty. 

Carter, a bagel shop owner from Tacoma was killed in the Marigny. NOPD said Carter was found dead after a shooting near Bourbon and Kerlerec Streets. He had been in New Orleans on vacation with his husband and co-founder of Howdy Bagel, Daniel Blagovich, according to an Instagram post.

Cornelius was arrested on Jan. 12 when officers found a stolen Kia in Bayou St. John. The NOPD said the Kia was involved in the homicide and then dumped the car in the bayou. 

The suspect is set for a discovery hearing on August 1.
