Ninth Ward shooting began with planned fight, big crowd

The fight, seen in many videos posted on social media, ended in gunfire Thursday afternoon. Three women were hurt.

NEW ORLEANS — A shooting in the Upper Ninth Ward that left three women hurt, started with a fight involving a large group of people, police said Friday. Neighbors and the district’s city councilmember told WWL Louisiana that the group was from a different neighborhood and appears to have met in their area for the confrontation.

Thursday afternoon, the NOPD was called to the 3000 block of Law Street. They found a woman who had been shot in the leg and another who had been stabbed in the head. Both were taken to the hospital. The next day police reported a third victim, also a woman, who had not been seriously hurt and refused medical care. They did not say how she was injured.

Video posted to social media that night shows a man running away from the corner of Law Street and Feliciana Street while a barrage of gunshots is heard in the background. The incident happened next to both Odile Davis Park and Fifth Church of God in Christ.

“It’s just disgusting to see what we saw in the video last night,” said District D Councilman Eugene Green. He said multiple sources told him that the group was from a different neighborhood and had met up on Law Street to fight.

Green described the neighborhood as largely peaceful. “People come to [Odile David Park] all the time and enjoy what this park has to offer,” he said.

Neighbors, who declined to be on camera due to safety concerns, were less positive about the neighborhood. They said gunfire is a normal occurrence near their homes and pointed out that the side of the church is riddled with bullet holes.

The NOPD has not named any suspects in the shooting. They are, though, seeking a woman they believe was there during the shooting who may have information about it. If you know anything call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111. You can remain anonymous.
