NEW ORLEANS — Dwayne Brown was supposed to make his first appearance in court on Friday after he allegedly burglarized eight Uptown homes.
The sixty-three-year-old was detoxing and didn’t appear in court, but his bond was set at $950,000.
Brown’s 11 charges include attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and four counts of vehicle theft.
Attorney Craig Mordock isn’t involved in Brown’s case but says with a bond that high, even the best attorney won’t change his position much.
“If any one of those charges falls off, that’s usually a win for the defendant,” Mordock said. “The bond is still going to be more than $500,000. As a defense lawyer, you’re always trying to pick off a charge here and there.”
Brown’s alleged burglary spree ended last Thursday morning when police say he broke into a home on Perrier and State Streets.
When NOPD arrived, the suspect took off, and an officer shot Brown in the abdomen.
According to court records, Brown’s history with law enforcement goes back decades. In the 90’s, Brown was charged with aggravated battery and multiple counts of simple burglary.
“With his past record and the seriousness of the charges, I would find it hard to believe that Mr. Brown is not given a sentence that includes significant jail time,” Mordock said.
Brown will be transported for bond notification on Saturday.
