NEW ORLEANS — Two months since a federal judge granted a motion to extend a previous deadline originally set in early August, a preliminary hearing to bring charges against the man accused of killing a Tangiphaoa Parish mother and her daughter last summer will have to wait until next year.
On Tuesday, United States Magistrate Judge Eva J. Dossier set a new date for the indictment of Daniel Callihan on Jan. 3.
Meanwhile, a grand jury in Mississippi indicted Callihan in July.
Just days after his arrest near Jackson, Miss., Callihan confessed that he killed Callie Brunett and her daughter Erin while being transported to Rankin County Jail.
"Sober, no drugs in my system, I did it," he said. "I have no reason for what I did. All I want to say is that I was sober and only on LexaPro – and off LexaPro – and I'm also diagnosed with borderline multiple personality disorder."
Despite that admission on camera, Callihan entered a plea of not guilty. The death penalty is a possibility.
Being booked into the Tangipahoa Jail, Callihan faces the following counts:
- 2 counts of first-degree murder
- 2 counts of aggravated kidnapping
- 1 count of second-degree kidnapping
- 1 count of armed robbery
- 1 count of unauthorized entry
- 1 count of simple arson
- 2 counts of theft of a firearm
- 1 count of burglary of a residence
