Continuance granted for indictment of man accused of Loranger murders, kidnapping

A U.S. magistrate judge granted a motion to delay a deadline to bring charges against Daniel Callihan.

NEW ORLEANS — United States Magistrate Judge Eva J. Dossier granted a motion to delay a deadline originally set for Monday to bring charges against Daniel Callihan, the man accused of killing a Tangiphaoa Parish mother and her daughter in June.

Just days after his arrest near Jackson, Miss., Callihan confessed that he killed Callie Brunett and her daughter Erin while being transported to Rankin County Jail.

"Sober, no drugs in my system, I did it," he said. "I have no reason for what I did. All I want to say is that I was sober and only on LexaPro – and off LexaPro – and I'm also diagnosed with borderline multiple personality disorder."

Despite that admission on camera, Callihan entered a plea of not guilty. The death penalty is a possibility.

The motion was granted so both sides have more time to settle on which charges go before a judge.

Prosecutors now have until Dec. 2 to present an indictment.

He is facing federal charges along with expected charges in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Being booked into the Tangipahoa Jail, Callihan faces the following counts:

  • 2 counts of first-degree murder
  • 2 counts of aggravated kidnapping
  • 1 count of second-degree kidnapping
  • 1 count of armed robbery
  • 1 count of unauthorized entry
  • 1 count of simple arson
  • 2 counts of theft of a firearm
  • 1 count of burglary of a residence

Victoria Cox was indicted on capital murder, kidnapping, and sexual battery charges in Mississippi, She is accused of helping Callihan kidnap two young sisters after allegedly killing their mother, Callie Brunett, 35, in Loranger.

The capital murder charge against Cox is for the kidnapping and death of Erin Brunett. The kidnapping charge is for the abduction of her 6-year-old sister. The sexual battery charge is connected to alleged sexual acts committed against the 6-year-old.

Cox pled not guilty in Hinds County, Miss., in July.
