Bicyclist killed in St. Claude hit-and-run

The New Orleans Police Department says it happened at about 10:48 p.m. Sunday at North Claiborne Avenue and Clouet Street in the St. Claude neighborhood.

NEW ORLEANS — UPDATE: The NOPD arrested 21-year-old Christian Rand after he allegedly admitted to being the driver of the vehicle involved in the fatal hit and run on Sunday.

A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run in New Orleans and police need the public’s help in finding the driver responsible.

The New Orleans Police Department says it happened at about 10:48 p.m. Sunday at North Claiborne Avenue and Clouet Street in the St. Claude neighborhood.

According to investigators, the bicyclist was riding on Clouet Street crossing N. Claiborne Ave. when he was struck by the driver of a gray or silver SUV that was traveling southbound on Clouet Street. 

After the driver of the SUV struck the bicyclist, he fled westbound on N. Claiborne Ave., over the bridge, and then in an unknown direction according to an NOPD report.           

Emergency Medical Personnel pronounced the unknown adult male dead on the scene. 

The incident remains under investigation. The Orleans Parish Coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and will release the identity of the victim.

Investigators are in the process of gathering evidence and information to identify the person involved in this incident.  Fatality Investigator M.
