LAKE CHARLES, La. — Severe thunderstorms flooded streets and homes in Lake Charles Monday, hitting people still working to rebuild from Hurricane Laura and Delta.
According to Meteorologist Alexandra Cranford, just over 12 inches of rain fell in some parts of the area.
Several tornado warnings were issued in the area throughout the day. There were five tornadoes reported across St. Landry, Jefferson Davis and Acadia parishes. Photos and video confirmed one of them so far.
The area remains under a flash flood warning until 6:30 p.m.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office deployed high water vehicles and boats on both sides of the parish as roads and homes are inundated with water.
"We are urging all residents to be vigilant and keep an eye on the evolving weather situation. We are also urging residents to stay put and DO NOT travel on the roadways," the sheriff's office said.
The Lake Charles area is still rebuilding after a busy 2020 hurricane season that brought Category 4 Laura and Category 2 Delta to their shore. Hurricane Laura evacuees housed in New Orleans hotels only recently returned home.
