Coastal flooding in Grand Isle

"The roadway is still passable with a few inches of water in various spots; however, as conditions change, LA 1 could be closed," police said.

GRAND ISLE, La. — Tropical Storm Alberto is pulling the heaviest rain away from the area, but it is causing some coastal flooding.

Louisiana State Police is currently monitoring roadway conditions on LA 1 between Golden Meadow and Grand Isle in Lafourche.

Winds from Alberto are increasing the water levels along the coast leading to flooding. Grand Isle is currently under a coastal flood advisory, WWL's Eleanor Tabone reported.

According to police, the roadway was still passable around 10:30 a.m. A picture shared on social media by LA State Police showed some of LA 1 below water.

"The roadway is still passable with a few inches of water in various spots; however, as conditions change, LA 1 could be closed," police said.

Newly elected police Chief Christopher Hernandez said he woke up and started warning residents at 4 a.m. that there was about to be some serious flooding, Tabone reported. Chief Hernandez said the water by his house was knee high.

Many in Grand Isle fear what this hurricane season is going to look like, after seeing flooding like this in June. Mayor David Camardelle is one of them.

According to our Chief Meteorologist Chris Franklin, flooding should improve Thursday but there may still be standing water.
