I-55 Northbound fully reopen near Amite

Motorists were asked to find alternate routes until the I-55 was fully reopened.

NEW ORLEANS — I-55 is now fully reopened near Amite, according to Louisiana State Police.

Around 6 p.m., both northbound and southbound lanes were closed on Interstate 55 due to downed trees.

Motorists were asked to find alternate routes until the I-55 was fully reopened.

Previous tornado warnings were issued for areas in St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Washington Parish, Pearl River, Hancock, and neighboring Mississippi counties, Walthall and Pike.

Residents were urged to seek shelter now and tune in to WWL-TV for the latest coverage.

A tornado warning was also issued specifically for Folsom, Loranger and Husser. Those warning expired at 6 p.m.

At 4:35 p.m., a "Severe Thunderstorm Warning" was issued for areas in East Baton Rouge, Livingston, Pike, Tangipahoa, West Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, St. Helena, Amite, Ascension, Pointe Coupee until 5:15 p.m., and for Hammond, La., and McComb, Miss., until 6:15 p.m.

A "Severe Thunderstorm Watch" was issued just after 3 p.m. for parts of Louisiana and Mississippi.

The NWS said wind gusts of 60 mph were recorded at the Lakefront Airport.
