Remembering Hurricane Katrina: August 28, 2005

Category 5 Storm bears down on Louisiana/Mississippi Coast, mandatory evacuations ordered.

NEW ORLEANS — Thursday, August 29 marks 19 years since Hurricane Katrina made landfall.

WWL Louisiana takes a look back at what happened on August 28, 2005.

Katrina is upgraded to a Category 4 storm with wind speeds reaching 145 mph.

1 a.m. - National Hurricane Center issues Hurricane Katrina Special Advisory Number 20

7 a.m. – Katrina is upgraded to a “potentially catastrophic” Category 5 storm. NOAA predicts “coastal storm surge flooding of 15 to 20 feet above normal tide levels.”

With Katrina's wind speeds reaching up to 175 mph, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin orders a mandatory evacuation and the Superdome is opened as a shelter of last resort.

10 a.m. – NOAA raises their estimate of storm surge flooding to 18 to 22 feet above normal tide levels.

10:11 a.m. - The National Weather Service in Slidell issues a dire warning ahead of Hurricane Katrina's landfall.
