Rainy forecast concerns popular Metairie krewe

Heavy rain is expected Saturday when the Krewe is supposed to roll so the parade may be shifted to Sunday.

METAIRIE, La. — The sky is set to open up on Saturday so the Magical Krewe of Mad Hatters is prepping for the rain. The Krewe is supposed to roll Saturday evening but that could now change.

The forecast is predicting heavy rain Saturday with the heaviest rain expected during the time the Magical Krewe of Mad Hatters rolls through Jefferson Parish. A contingency plan is being worked on.

Joey Lacoste, the Krewe's co captain told WWL Louisiana, "We're watching that crazy weather, but you know this is New Orleans, you never know things could change in a heartbeat."

He said he's working on a backup plan with the parish. "Basically, instead of rolling at 5 o'clock on Saturday afternoon, we would pick a time slot on Sunday and we would roll at that time."

This parade is the biggest in Jefferson parish, with a little over 800 riders, and that includes musicians.

"We have so much musical talent and so much musical equipment  that we're rolling down the streets with, so we definitely have concerns," said Lacoste.

This is the fourth-year the parade has rolled, but this is the first time they've had to prepare for last minute changes.  "Its a lot of work, there's so much that goes into creating the parade, organizing, planning."

As of right now the parade is still set to roll out on Saturday, but if changes are made, they'll be announced Thursday evening. So keep an eye on the Krewe's Facebook and website.
