List: Emergency Shelters Parish-by-Parish

Here is a list of emergency shelters open to the public.

NEW ORLEANS — With Hurricane Francine anticipated to make landfall Wednesday night in Southeast Louisiana, many parishes have opened emergency storm shelters.

Jefferson Parish

Terrytown Playground 641 Heritage Ave, Terrytown, LA 70056

Grand Isle 

The storm shelter will open on Wednesday at 6 a.m. at the Municipal Auditorium located at 880 Verret Street. 

Residents utilizing the shelter should bring the following items:  

  • state driver’s license or identification card 
  • bedding 
  • personal hygiene products
  • medication
  • baby formula, diapers, and wipes
  • power strips and phone chargers
  • food and water to last three days

Pets are allowed at the shelter but must be kept in a kennel inside the pet area.  Pet owners are required to bring food, bowls, and leashes to walk pets.

Residents in need of transportation to the shelter should call 985-873-6357.  

Residents residing in temporary housing are highly encouraged to seek shelter with family or friends or at the evacuation shelter.

Lafourche Parish

• Lockport Community Center – 5610 Highway 1. Please remember to bring at least two days’ worth of food, water, medicine and bedding. Also remember to bring your charging banks and charging cables for portable electronic devices.

• 6 people there now, more expected to pull up

• Two days worth of food water, charging cables

Plaquemines Parish

Temporary Shelter Information:

• Location: PPG Multipurpose Center 333 F Edward Hebert Blvd

• Now open.

• Conditions: Shelter and water only; please bring all essentials, medications and small pets are welcome.

St. Charles Parish

A Shelter of Last Resort will open at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center (274 Judge Edward Dufresne Pkwy, Luling) at 7 a.m. on Wednesday. The shelter is only for St. Charles Parish residents; IDs will be checked. 

Residents should bring blankets, pillows, snacks, water, and any necessary medications; cots will be provided. Absolutely no weapons or contraband will be allowed in the shelter.

Pets can come with you to the shelter. Dogs must be leashed, and cats must be kenneled. Bring your pet’s food, bowls, medications, and their medical records.

St. John the Baptist Parish

Temporary shelters at East St. John Preparatory School and West St. John High School Gymnasium will open Wednesday at 8 a.m. for residents seeking secure shelter.

  • East St. John Preparatory School, 200 Ory Drive, LaPlace, LA 70068
  • West St. John High School Gymnasium, 480 LA-3127, Edgard, LA 70049

Residents should bring their own food, water, medicine, and other items needed to make themselves comfortable.

Transportation is available for those unable to get to the shelter until 10 a.m. Wednesday. Residents needing assistance, please call 985-652-6338 or 985-652-2222.

Terrebonne Parish

  • Location: Municipal Auditorium Shelter, 880 Verret Street, Houma
  • Shelter can take up to 600 people. 
  • Ride to shelter – 985-873-6357 

Hancock County, Mississippi 

An emergency shelter will at 7 p.m. at the Kiln Shelter. Please bring self-contained items such as bedding, medications, personal hygiene items, drinks and snacks.

Pets will not be allowed in the General Population Shelters.
