With feels-like temperatures approaching 110 degrees this week, we are already feeling the summer heat south Louisiana delivers every year.

NEW ORLEANS — With feels-like temperatures approaching 110 degrees this week, we are already feeling the summer heat south Louisiana delivers every year. Unfortunately, that also means your air conditioner will likely be working overtime.

According to Entergy, cooling down your home eats up more than half of your electric bill during these high temps. Here are five tips from Entergy offers to keep your bill as low as possible.

First, use fans to cool off. Ceiling fans and box fans use little electricity to circulate air. Make are five tips to keep your bills low.

“Make sure ceiling fans are rotating in the right direction counter-clockwise during summer to push cooler air down into the room. Be sure to turn all fans off in unused rooms,” Entergy officials said.

Second, change your air filter. Air conditioning experts recommend changing your filter monthly this time of year. If you have a window unit with a reusable filter, clean it off monthly.

Three, seal cracks and holes around doors and windows.

“Weather stripping and caulk will help keep the cold air in and the hot air out,” Entergy officials said.

Four, close your blinds and shades to keep the sun from warming up your home.

Five, set your thermostat to 78 degrees or the highest comfortable temperature.

“Every degree lower than 78 can raise a bill as much as 3%,” Entergy officials said.
