Report: Residents work to rescue roaming alligators on Alligator Bayou Road

A rescue mission is underway in and around the Spanish Lake Basin as escaped alligators are roaming around Alligator Bayou Road.

An American Alligator swims in it's natural habitat in a canal in Shark Valley, Everglades National Park, Florida, on June 23, 2016. Florida, famed for its turquoise beaches, is almost as well known for its alligators. Humans are not their favorite meal, but one would not know that from the recent series of alarming gator attacks on people. / AFP / RHONA WISE / TO GO WITH AFP STORY by Leila MACOR, "Encounters between gators, humans on rise in Florida" (Photo credit should read RHONA WISE/AFP/Getty Images)

ASCENSION PARISH -- A rescue mission is underway in and around the Spanish Lake Basin as escaped alligators are roaming around Alligator Bayou Road.

According to our partners at WBRZ, about 30 alligators escaped their pens when when flooding struck the area. Frank Bonifay, one of the co-owners of the property where the gators are housed, has rescued five so far, but are worried that the gators may hurt someone, or vice-versa.

"We're going to catch him just like we been doing, saving them and putting them back in their pen. It's going to take a few days maybe a few weeks," Bonifay said.
