ATCHAFALAYA, La. — If you drive along the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, phase two of a project to install speed limit trackers along the roadway Begins next Monday.
There will be nightly lane closures on the bridge as crews install radar detection devices and new speed limit signs. The speed limit is now 60 miles per hour for all drivers.
The truck limit had been 55, but DOTD said that was creating issues when drivers were forced to weave around other vehicles. That, along with speeding, tailgating, and distractions, led to a number of deadly accidents.
"If we can make people aware of their driving habits and of their speed, then we really feel strongly that we'll be able to minimize the amount of crashes we have on that bridge," DOTD spokesman Rodney Mallett said.
The cameras that photo enforce the speed limit will not go up until later next year.
