NEW ORLEANS — Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced that Interstate 10 between St. Martin Parish and Baton Rouge, including the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, is closed due to potential winter weather.
DOTD advises motorists to stay off the roadways as many roads are becoming impassable due to the winter weather conditions.
Temperatures are plunging Monday night as Arctic air surges in from the north. A few scattered showers may briefly change over to freezing rain overnight, especially farther north toward southwest Mississippi. Any accumulations look very light, but it may be enough to cause a light glaze of ice on some elevated roads. This would be mainly bridges and overpasses north of the lake. Be very careful if you have to drive around Monday night or Tuesday morning. If some ice does form, it may linger into the Tuesday morning commute. Any ice should melt during the day on Tuesday as temperatures rise above freezing.
We will really begin to feel the frigid air blowing in Monday night and Tuesday. Tuesday morning will start with a light freeze or frost through most of our area, but northern Tangipahoa and Washington parishes may dip into the hard freeze range near 20° Monday evening to Tuesday morning. Protect pipes, plants, pets and people.
DOTD crews will continue to monitor state bridges and roadways.
