LAFOURCHE PARISH, La. — A multi-vehicle crash that left a 72-year-old man dead in Lafourche Parish Wednesday night is under investigation, Louisiana State Police said.
Just after 6 p.m., police said troopers responded to the crash on U.S. Highway 90, about three miles east of Louisiana Highway 182.
The initial investigation found a 2007 Nissan Armada being driven by 72-year-old Cornel Jones of Houma was going west on U.S. Highway 90 when it crossed a raised median and hit a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado truck and trailer.
After the collision, police said the Chevrolet then hit a commercial vehicle and a 2013 Mercedes-Benz can that were also going east on U.S. Highway 90.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner's Office, and the reason he crossed over the median is still under investigation, according to police.
Due to the extensive damage, police said investigators were not currently able to determine if Jones was wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to the hospital for treatment on moderate injuries, according to police, and the drivers of the commercial vehicle and Mercedes-Benz were not injured.
Toxicology samples were taken from Jones and the Chevrolet's driver for analysis, and no alcohol was detected when the drivers of the commercial vehicle and Mercedes-Benz provided breath samples, according to police.
