Elevated Westbank Expressway reopens in both directions

The expressway reopened around 5 p.m.

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — The elevated Westbank Expressway is reopened after power lines from what appeared to be a downed transformer fell across the roadway early Monday, causing a series of accidents, halting traffic, and knocking out power to thousands in a busy commercial corridor.

The expressway reopened around 5 p.m.

Initially all traffic on the lower and upper expressway was shut down at Manhattan Blvd.

Close to 2,000 buildings lost power.

Captain Michael McAuliffe of the Harvey Fire Department said the initial call came in around 9 a.m. with a driver reporting that wires were entangled in his windshield on the elevated expressway.

Three vehicles were struck by the downed wires, but there were no reported injuries.
