Drivers face near-zero visibility and standstill traffic amid fatal I-10 crash and closure

Chase Ward, who was on the interstate Tuesday morning, captured how quickly the super fog rolled in, lowering visibility to close to 0%.

NEW ORLEANS — A weather event called a Super Fog has been blamed for at least four accidents along I-10. These happened at around 4:30 a.m.

The shutdown and cleanup of these accidents have left drivers stuck on the interstate with plumes of smoke from a marsh fire burning in New Orleans East plaguing cars and trucks caught in the traffic.

Soon after at around 8:25 a.m., the highway looked dark, in some photos break-lights are barely visible on cars.

Ward also captured a photo of an 18-wheeler that had been flipped over on the highway.

The driver of an overturned 18-wheeler died in the crash. NOPD reported that he had been taken to the hospital where he died from injuries he suffered in the crash.

The crash has effectively cut off the direct link between New Orleans East and Slidell, with the interstate closed in both directions.
