KENNER, La. — Interstate 10 in Jefferson Parish has reopened after a chemical spill closed all of the eastbound lanes for several hours on Thursday.
According to the Kenner Police Department, potassium hydroxide was spilled from an 18-wheeler between Loyola Drive and Williams Boulevard shortly before noon. As a precaution, the all lanes were closed and traffic was diverted onto Veterans Boulevard.
Police originally reported the chemical spilled as sodium hydroxide, but corrected their report to potassium hydroxide around 3:15 p.m.
The closure caused some serious traffic congestion past the parish lines. The interstate was reopened to traffic around 2:20 p.m. Drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible as the traffic congestion resolves.
