NEW ORLEANS — After starting the season 2-0, the Saints' season went straight downhill.
At 2-7 following the loss to the Carolina Panthers, the team decided to fire head coach Dennis Allen on Monday.
With Allen gone, the Saints named assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi the interim coach.
Here are some potential candidates to replace Allen:
Darren Rizzi
Rizzi will get the rest of the season to prove that he can be a head coach in the NFL. If he succeeds, the Saints may decide to remove the interim label.
Aaron Glenn
Glenn is currently the Lions' defensive coordinator. He interviewed for the Saints head coaching job in 2022 He left the Saints to join Dan Campbell’s coaching staff on the Detroit Lions after working as the team’s DB Coordinator from 2016 to 2020.
Brian Flores
Flores is another candidate the Saints interviewed back in 2022. He is currently the Minnesota Vikings' defensive coordinator.
Ben Johnson
Johnson is currently the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. Many around the league believe he is one of the best offensive minds in the NFL. During last year's coaching cycle, Johnson was touted by many teams, but he ultimately decided to stay in Detroit to make a run for the Super Bowl.
Bill Belichick
The longtime New England Patriots coach may reenter the coaching cycle this offseason. Belichick won six Super Bowls in 24 seasons with the Patriots.
