NEW ORLEANS — Despite naming 2023 fourth draft pick Jake Haener the Saints starting quarterback for Sunday's home game against the visiting Washington Commanders (8-5), New Orleans officially announced that Derek Carr is out.
The Saints (5-8) listed the 33-year-old, four-time Pro Bowler as doubtful on the Friday injury report due to a left-hand injury and the final step of concussion protocol.
Carr, who is 189 of 279 for 2,145 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions this season, was knocked out of Week 14's game against the New York Giants with two injuries in the fourth quarter.
Haener gets the nod over rookie fifth-rounder Spencer Rattler, who started three games for the Saints during the team's seven-game losing streak after Carr suffered an oblique injury against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 5.
Coming off the bench this season, Haener is 14 of 29 for 177 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions, while Rattler is 55 of 99 for 571 with one TD and 2 INTs during his starts.
Aside from Carr's downgrade, the Saints announced the activation of defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon from Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform and placed linebacker D'Marco Jackson on Injured Reserve.
Injured wide receiver Bub Means was also listed as out as he recovers from an ankle injury.
