NEW ORLEANS — A day after the Saints fell to the Atlanta Falcons head coach Dennis Allen was asked about the team's identity.
"I think we have I think we have a fast, explosive offense. And I think we have an opposite opportunistic defense," Allen said on Monday. He also said there are some areas in both phases the team needs to improve on.
In Sunday's game against the Saints, "explosive offense" failed to score a touchdown. They had five red zone trips and were unable to score a touchdown each time.
Rookie kicker Blake Grupe accounted for all 15 of the Saints' points. He made 5 of 6 field goal attempts.
After the game, running back Alvin Kamara said the team didn't have an identity. "We don't have an identity as a team. We're a team that says we want to do it, and we don't do it and It shows," Kamara said Sunday.
Allen was asked about Kamaras and said, "That's probably a better question for Alvin to answer instead of me trying to speak for him."
Despite 300 yards through the air for Derek Carr and 140 rushing yards, the Saints' offense couldn't finish in the red zone.
"In between the 20s, we moved the ball, you know, pretty well. It was really once we got to the 25-20-yard line where we made some mistakes that, you know, either put us behind the chains, or we turn the ball over down there. So, yeah, that was that was that was frustrating," Allen said.
So far this season the Saints are 19th in points per game (20.8) and 12th in yards per game (347.1).
The 5-6 Saints will host the 8-3 Detroit Lions on Sunday at noon.
