Report: Saints will release Michael Thomas

Thomas has dealt with numerous injuries and has played in a total of 20 games since the 2019 season

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Saints former NFL Offensive Player of the Year has reportedly played his last game in the Black and Gold.

According to our partners at The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate, Michael Thomas is expected to be released at some point before the start of the league year, which begins on March 13.

After breaking numerous records in 2019, Thomas has dealt with multiple injuries. He has played in a total of 20 games since the 2019 season, including missing the entire 2021 season after undergoing ankle surgery immediately before the season.

Last season, Thomas was placed on IR after injuring his knee against the Vikings in Week 10. He finished the season with 39 catches, 448 receiving yards and 1 touchdown.

The 2016 second-round pick did have some a notable off the field incidents last year. In November he was arrested in Jefferson Parish after Kenner Police said Thomas threw a brick and shoved a man. He was charged with two misdemeanors, simple battery and criminal mischief, after an investigation.

In December, during a Saints loss, to the Lions Thomas tweets had some had some fans saying he was calling out Derek Carr. He first tweeted "AT wide open." Thomas cleared up the confusion with his next tweet, saying, "Y’all said I was throwing shade not at all my eyes just work check yours 😂."

In January, Thomas tweeted saying, "well if I didn’t get set up by a bad ball I probably would’ve had a light little 1k yards this year but could of should of I know I get it lol."

On Thursday about an hour after news broke that Thomas would soon be released, he took tweeted saying he was only on a 1 year deal.
