NEW ORLEANS — Shortly after signing a one-year, $13-million deal with the New Orleans Saints, it has been reported that defensive end Chase Young is undergoing a neck procedure that could cost him most of the offseason.
According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, a source says the procedure is expected to keep the 24-year-old former off the field into training camp. But he is expected to be ready in time for the start of the 2024-25 season.
He also said that teams, including the Saints, were aware of his health issue, and that New Orleans was OK with moving forward with the signing.
"New Saints DE Chase Young, who signed his one-year, $13 million deal with New Orleans today, is undergoing a neck procedure that is expected to sideline him into training camp, per sources," Schefter tweeted on X. "The expectation is that he will return in time for the season. Teams were aware of his neck issue, and the Saints were comfortable moving ahead with it."
Young was selected No. 2 in the 2020 NFL draft by the Washington Commanders. He spent four seasons with them before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers at the deadline.
He has 16.5 sacks in his career, but almost half of those came in his rookie year. Chase tore his ACL in 2021 and only appeared in 3 games the following season.
Last year, he matched his career high of 7.5 sacks, five of which came in nine games for Washington before the trade.
