NEW ORLEANS — The Saints have apparently decided to keep offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael despite a lackluster offensive season that saw the team rank 22nd in the league in points scored per game, according to a Tweet by New Orleans Football's Mike Triplett.
The Saints averaged just over 19 points per game, which was 2 full points below its output in 2021, when the team had four different quarterbacks go under center, and nearly 10 points per game less than the 2020 outfit that averaged 29 points per game with Drew Brees and Sean Payton.
The Saints battled injuries in 2022 with top receiver Michael Thomas playing only the first couple of games and Jarvis Landry missing games as well.
The team also battled injuries on the offensive line.
Jameis Winston, who started the season at quarterback, was injured in the team's first game, lost his job to injury after the third game and didn't play again.
Veteran Andy Dalton struggled at times as the team lost double digit games for the first time since 2005.
Head Coach Dennis Allen, in an attempt at continuity, kept offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael after taking over for Payton, but the team often struggled to score points. They were shut out in San Francisco, limited to one score against Carolina and had 8 games below 20 points.
Allen was seemingly on the hot seat, but a late season run of three consecutive wins was enough to keep him in the post for another year.
It was the second straight season in which the Saints missed the playoffs. 14 of the league's 32 teams, just under 50 percent, qualify for the playoffs.
